No Contest. Guilty? traffic violation?

I got a ticket for running a red light …… im in Ca so to his face. your $ 445. My question is if I do not contest plea? to and what are my options? The reason I did not brake because my breaks were doing was and I do not feel safe when they break the yellow light was on …. I was returning from buying NAPA brake pads ……. thanks
